Wow congratulations to the Lionesses, the British womens football team, they won the Euro football finals. Amazing work for football and women.
Until last Sunday I have hated football for 30 years , within weeks of arriving in Reading as a new officer I policed my first football match. The day turned violent early and it was at the old standing pitch in
Elm Park. There was a pitch invasion and I ended up on the 9 0'clock news as I was trying to assist a colleague ( Eddie) in restraining a fan. On that day I had so many death and rape threats from middle aged men I was shocked, upset and angry. The venom and anger they had against me was truly frightening as they were caged behind the fence. And so my hatred of football and the culture started then and there.
Over the next 30 years I had so many rest days, Saturdays, boxing days cancelled to police football with no thanks or reward. However the womens finals on Sunday changed everything, they played the best football I have ever seen and just the thrill of watching women play was amazing. I felt a real connection to them and so so proud of what they have achieved for football and equality for women.
